Dorothy Urfer
When Dorothy Urfer first took her job as a dental assistant in her early twenties, she could not have known that by the age of twenty-four she’d be working as a cartoonist. That’s precisely what happened in 1929 when she was hired by the Newspaper Enterprise Association to work in their Cleveland office.
Her first assignment was to take over the series Radiomania. It was while she was working on Radiomania that she began work on her own series Annibelle. The strip followed the antics of Annibelle’s social life and the escapades she experienced on her dates with her many suitors.
Annibelle ran until 1936 when Ms. Urfer married Jo King, another cartoonist, in late 1935.
From comic strips, she went on to work writing and illustrating books. The 1953 edition of The Little Red Bicycle is credited to Dorothy Urfer King.
