Gail Simone
Wonder Woman, Deadpool, Batgirl, Lara Croft, Birds of Prey, and the list goes on. What do they all have in common? They were all brought to life at one time or another by writer Gail Simone.
The list is impressive, but it becomes even more so when you consider it’s only a partial list. Simone first burst onto the scene with her blog Women in Refrigerators, meant to shine a spotlight on the seedy practice of using the deaths, dismemberments, or abuse of female characters as plot devices to move a male character’s story forward (or to make them the hero and the woman the ever-present victim). After making waves with WiR, she wrote for Marvel’s Deadpool before moving over to DC Comics and Birds of Prey. A few years later, Simone was handed Batgirl and, in 2007, the ultimate female warrior Wonder Woman, an honor shared by only a very small handful of women before her.
