Violet Barclay
Before there was Marvel Comics, there was Timely comics, and their offices were located at the Empire State Building in New York. It was here, in 1942, that a twenty-year-old named Violet Barclay walked in to start her job as an artist on staff.
At the time, Timely’s focus was on funny, anthropomorphically themed animal comics. Violet was subsequently put to work on Super Rabbit, and Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal. When the industry’s focus switched to teen comics, she inked the popular Nellie the Nurse title.
In 1949, Barclay exited Timely to work for Standard, DC Comics, and American Comics before leaving the film in the 1950s to illustrate fashion ads for companies that included Lane Bryant.
